Halloween ~Fun Facts~

by admin on October 26, 2011

Have you ever wondered where Halloween traditions originated?

I was decorating for a Halloween party we are having and as I was putting out this strange array of decorations I began to wonder where all these traditions come from – you may be surprised at what I uncovered.

Carving vegetables actually began in Great Britain where children would carve faces in potatoes or turnips and place a candle inside and take them door to door offering prayers for departed souls who were returning to earth on all Saints Day, November 1st in return for treats, usually bread with currants. The burning candle inside is to keep evil spirits away.

Why do we carve pumpkins instead of turnips or potatoes? Irish immigrants brought the custom to the North America in the late 19th century; however, pumpkins were more plentiful so they were substituted.

Why are they called Jack-O-Lanterns? Aptly named after Stingy Jack who was an evil Irishman, so evil that neither heaven nor hell would have him. When he died with nowhere to go he was destined to roam the earth for all of eternity! Catholic school children would carry the lighted Jack lantern to pray for his soul.

Costumes are linked to All Saints Day from Medieval Times. People would wear costumes, chant and cause mischief while going door to door again offering prayers in return for treats.

Black cats are associated with witches. In the Dark Ages it was believed the devil gave black cats to witches. Not all countries feel black cats crossing your path are bad luck, in Ireland, Scotland and England it is good luck if a black cat crosses your path.

Bats are synonymous with witches. It is alleged that witches attract bats and be careful not to let a bat fly in your home on Halloween, it is believed that ghosts living in your home invited them in!

Witches brooms evolved from elderly women who could not afford walking sticks to make their way through the woods would use brooms and flying on the broom came as a result of a ceremony potion that witches would rub on their bodies which was actually a hallucinogenic ointment that gave them the feeling they were flying.

So how about the witches caldron? Well actually the Pagan Celts believed that all departed souls awaited reincarnation in the “Crone’s caldron. A Crone is what eventually evolved into a witch but was first a symbol for Earth’s Mother and her caldron was the womb before being reborn. The hat, wart on the nose and unattractive appearance morphed as the witch evolved.

The color orange represents the Pagan celebration of autumn harvest and the color of leaves and black is a representation of the death of summer.

Did you know that 95% of pumpkins are grown in Illinois? A pumpkin is actually a fruit and the flower of the pumpkin needs to be pollinated before the pumpkin can grow. The world’s largest pumpkin weights in at a whopping 1,805 pounds! !

Happy Halloween to all!

One More Reason to Eat Hershey Kisses!

by admin on May 16, 2011

Welcome to all my new readers and to all my regulars thank you for your love and support! I can’t believe the rate at which my list is growing I must either be touching a nerve or hearts; I hope it is the latter! A couple of readers asked about the difference between the content within blogs they receive and I thought I would just provide a quick explanation about my sites and how all this works. I will make it short but stick with me because today’s blog is really about making the world more green and beautiful. Saving the planet, eating kisses and making some money!

But first about my companies.
Right now I have three sites, but it soon will be four websites.

Step By Step to Sold is my website for people selling their homes and realtors with information on Feng Shui and staging. If you are a realtor you should be signed up for that email (it is a completely separate list). We are launching a number of new programs for homeowners and realtors within weeks and we have a brand new directory so sellers can find realtors by zip code. If you are the first 50 realtors to sign up for the email, your listing is FREE. So if you are a realtor go to www.stepbysteptosold.com and sign up soon.

All I Want is … Everything website is all about inspiration and is based upon my series of books by the same name. It’s all about inspiration and helping you live a more a joyful life, showing you how to flip off the “auto pilot directing your life” and switch on your buttons marked choice and awareness. It’s all about life, about remembering that the hour glass is turned over. By illuminating the path that I took to create my life I hope I can make a difference in each life I touch as well as the world.

A New Day A New Vision shows you how live beautifully! It is all about LIFESTYLE; a manner of living that reflects how you choose to live your life. ALL I Want is Everything is about choosing how to live and A New Day A New Vision its companion is all about how to make it all happen. Making your life easier and more beautiful is my goal!

KimUpstone.com will be my new website for my speaking clients. My dream has always been to touch as many people as I can with my message of love and respect for ourselves as well as everyone in the world and my goal making my Women’s Transformational Group which is a Facebook group (if you haven’t connected with me personally or A New Day site and the Women’s Transformational Group join me now) my goal is to personally touch a million people and thanks to my beautiful tribe (yes you are included in that group) I am on my way. Speaking to corporations and groups around the country will help me achieve that goal as well as complete my mission to fund the building of an orphanage with The Global Orphans Project by the end of 2012.

So please if you know someone who could benefit from this blog share your copy and ask them to sign up. There is power in numbers. Strong and aware we will become a force to be reckoned with and together change the world!

Welcome to our World! Yes it is our world; our earth. It was gifted to us to use and we have not always treated it with the respect it deserves. Thankfully we have begun to turn the corner and do all understand that we all contribute to the collective good and the bad of the world. The good is the work we do to help others in our neighborhoods and around the world and the care we show the earth. By causing no harm to others as well as our planet and understand the law of the echo; that what you send out is returned to you we can more easily see that we all need to pay attention to the imprint we leave. The earth would not require help if we were not here. We interfere with its natural flow.

“if all insects on Earth disappeared, within 50 years all life on Earth would end. If all human beings disappeared from the Earth, within 50 years all forms of life would flourish.” — Biologist Jonas Salk

I do recycle everything I can and buy natural products as often as I can. But I read some startling statistics last week that I wanted to share with you:

 Everyday packaging fills 33% of our landfills
 American recycles 23% of their trash while Austria is at 60%
 Paper recycled after use in American is now at 76%
 America is the world’s largest trash producer at 1609 pounds per person each year
 Hershey makes 20 million kisses a day and each wrapper is completely recyclable! Now this is really exciting.

Here are some really cool recycling and rebate programs you might not be aware of. Please check the websites or stores for any restrictions.

Recycle old laptops, cell phones, cameras, mp3 players,Blu-Ray discs and games
Costco – = Costco Cash Card
Wal-Mart = Prepaid Visa Card
Office Depot = Office Depot Gift Card

Printer Cartridges
Staples = $2 in Staples Rewards

Reusable Mugs and Bags
Starbucks 10 cents off each time your fill up
CVS gives a bonus each time you bring you own bag @4 visits=$1.00 Extra Bucks
Many grocery stores now give an incentive to bring your own bags, make sure to ask

Beauty Product Containers
Origins – recycles all brand of cosmetic containers – receive free Origins samples
Mac Cosmetics – bring in 6 empty Mac product containers and receive a free lipstick
Aveda – return all twist and flip top caps from any products to a participating school (ketchup, shampoo, water, detergent and pharmaceuticals) these are typically removed and thrown away and Aveda recycles them for use in future products.

Appliances
Most utility companies now give rebates for changing out old less efficient appliances. Check with your local power company and city.

Terracycle.com partners with companies to run promotions so check their website often to get updates. At the time of this blog they are partnering with Old Navy in recycling old, broken or unusable flip flops. They use the rubber to create children’s playground equipment.

Greenopolis.com has 130,000 kiosks for recycling around US (enter your zip code to find a center near you), take the recyclables and receive reward points that you accumulate to use for product and services at 10,000 different retailers.

Together we can make the world more beautiful for ourselves as well as future generations!

Kim

PS I agree recycling the wrapper is one more good reason to eat lots of Hershey Kisses!
